The treatment is usually performed fully clothed on a tatami mat on the floor, although it can also be adapted for work on a treatment table. Pressure may be applied using the thumbs, fingers, palms, forearms, elbows, knees, or feet, together with gentle rocking, rotations, stretching, and selected massage techniques. Like conventional massage, it can provide a valuable opportunity for relaxation while offering a distinct approach to bodywork.
Shiatsu originates in Japan and literally means “finger pressure”. It developed from older Japanese manual traditions under the influence of traditional Chinese medicine. It was later further shaped through contact with Western medicine, particularly anatomy and physiology.
Shiatsu is not a single strictly defined technique, but encompasses different schools and approaches. The emphasis may be on subtle touch and work with the fascia, deeper work with muscular and connective tissue and the body’s structure, or work with the meridians. In traditional Chinese medicine, meridians represent a model through which different parts and functions of the body are understood as interconnected, and also in relation to a person’s emotional and mental aspects.
Despite their differences, many of these approaches share an integrative understanding and a whole-person perspective. Discomfort in one part of the body is not viewed in isolation, but in relation to the body as a whole, while physical states are considered within the person’s broader emotional and mental experience.
It may suit you if you are open to a different experience of touch, pressure, movement, and stretching. Those who were new to this kind of bodywork have also described their experience positively in our Google reviews.
Please wear clean, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely: long trousers and a short- or long-sleeved shirt, preferably made from natural materials. Avoid denim, dresses, skirts, and clothing with hard buttons or zippers. Please bring a clean pair of socks to wear during the treatment.
Many people experience a gradual sense of slowing down, deeper relaxation, reduced mental and emotional tension, and greater awareness of the body. The treatment may support parasympathetic activity, which is associated with rest and recovery. Responses vary: some people notice the effects during the session, while others experience them more clearly afterwards.
The treatment itself lasts approximately 60 minutes. Please allow a little additional time for a short conversation before and after the session.
Although the treatment may support physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, it is not a medical treatment or physiotherapy and does not replace professional medical care.
